Southwest Jewelry from the American Southwest is unique to itself and has a look that has become popular worldwide. Southwest Jewelry is made by Navajo and Zuni Native American Indians, Contemporary and Hispanic Artists and companies throughout the Southwest that employ native Americans of all walks of life to work together in producing their own unique Southwest Jewelry styles. Generally, it is made with Sterling Silver, Turquoise, Coral and other gemstones that accompany them in good contrast.
The Navajo Indians focus on fancy work to the silver by stamping, engraving or hand creating filigree that they apply to their pieces to create their Southwest Jewelry appearance. Navajo Indian Jewelry most often incorporates a Turquoise stone as that is the stone of choice by the Navajo people and has been for centuries. The Navajo believe Turquoise is a Skystone put on earth from the great father above. Originally, the Navajo made Southwestern Turquoise Jewelry for themselves, soon they traded it to other native people who wore it for good luck and prosperity. When the tourists came, they wanted a piece of Southwest Jewelry and Turquoise to take home with them for a souvenir or their Southwest adventure.
The Zuni Indians focus on stonework, they make fairly simple silver items to accommodate their fine stone cutting abilities. They make rings, bracelets, necklaces, earring and many other Jewelry items with many tiny stones called Needlepoint and Pettipoint. They also do inlaid Turquoise Jewelry and/or inlaid Southwest Jewelry with multiple colored gemstones laminated together to make very colorful and unique Jewelry designs unique to the Zuni Native American Indians.
The Hopi Indians have, until recently, been known for their fine silver overlay work on their Southwest Jewelry. They saw out intricate designs from sheet silver, then they sweat solder that piece onto another solid sheet of silver to make their pieces. Southwest Jewelry made by the Hopi Indians is highly sought after as it is very unique and generally not seen made by any other artists throughout the world.
