Natural Turquoise

Natural Turquoise is one of the most fascinating gemstones on earth and it was also one of the very first gems found by mankind well before biblical times, over 7,500 years ago. Kings, Pharaohs and historic individuals worshiped Turquoise and unconditionally believed that this gemstone has healing powers. In more recent years the Native Americans began worshiping Natural Turquoise when the Anasazi Indians discovered it around 300 B.C. Pueblo Bonito at Chaco Canyon became a major trade mecca for Natural Turquoise to the historic Aztec civilization of Mexico around 1000 A.D. Turquoise has played a major historic roll in the history of North America and it is now an very important part of our American Heritage.

Today, individuals wear Turquoise more then ever, in fact, Turquoise is one of the top ten gemstones sold worldwide. Having said this most of the Turquoise on the market today is not Natural Turquoise. This is an unfortunate, but necessary situation due to the supply and demand for Turquoise Jewelry. Most manufacturers and jewelers making low end Turquoise jewelry are using stabilized Turquoise at best, and a lot of them are using re-constituted or Fake Turquoise. It is even getting hard to find Real Turquoise, whether natural or treated.

There is only one real meaning of "Natural Turquoise", which is Turquoise that has not been tampered with in anyway, i.e., no dyes have been added, no epoxy has been added for stabilization, etc. Natural Turquoise cannot be easily found in the marketplace today, especially Gem Turquoise. The purist who seeks it is advised to buy direct from the mine or from a knowledgeable business which specializes in Natural Turquoise. It has been claimed that as little as 2-10 percent of Turquoise that is mined is of sufficient hardness and quality to be used in jewelry without stabilization. Natural Turquoise is rare, indeed, much more rare then Diamonds even!
