Here is a beautiful hand cut Egyptian Turquoise cabochon by John and Dillon Hartman of Durango Silver Company. We are proud to offer this high end historic Turquoise! Until recent years this materials has been lost, sitting in the dessert un-mined. The mines have been re-opened, but the availability is limited and there is no idea how much Turquoise the ancient mines will yeild as they have been mined heavily by the Ancient Egyptians.

This cabochon has been hand cut in Durango, Colorado USA from genuine Egyptian Turquoise rough. This highgrade Turquoise cabochon is hard and durable. The Turquoise is a beautiful blue with attractive red to brown spider web matrix. The beauty of the cabochon will be exponentially great once set into Sterling Silver or Gold Jewelry. This hand cut gemstone features a nice slightly angled, yet almost 90 degree side for easy bezel setting, a nice rounded dome and a thin backing (none metal containing for light weight durability). This real Turquoise is not dyed and has not been re-constituted, but has been stabilized to keep the color from changing with the oils of the skin.

Since at least the First Dynasty (3000 BCE), and possibly before then, turquoise was used by the Egyptians and was mined by them in the Sinai Peninsula, called the "Country of Turquoise" by the native Monitu. There are six Turquoise mines in the region, all on the southwest coast of the peninsula, covering an area of some 650 square kilometers (250 sq mi). The two most important of these mines, from a historic perspective, are Serabit el-Khadim and Wadi Maghareh, believed to be among the oldest of known Turquoise mines. The former mine is situated about 4 kilometers from an ancient temple dedicated to Hathor. This Turquoise can be found on famous historic objects such as King Tut's burial items.
