Durango Silver Company History

Durango Silver Company has been designing jewelry since 1972. We have developed many jewelry lines for ourselves, special interest groups and companies, department stores, catalog and mail order companies and have even worked in conjunction with very large production companies to incorporate our designs on their products. We are able to develop any size of jewelry manufacturing project and to meet any price range desired by our clients.

Example: We were asked to develop a line of jewelry representing the Native American Indian. We designed and produced many beautiful sculptures of famous American Indian Characters accompanied with a short story for each. We developed the production company to produce the sculptures in sterling silver and created the templates to be used to engrave the short stories on sterling silver lighter cases. We then produced and shipped 23,000 pieces to Zippo Lighter Co of Tokyo per month for an eighteen month run.

Today, we enjoy designing and creating one of a kind pieces of western silver for our gallery as well as others that appreciate our work. We (John & Dillon Hartman) create most of our jewelry from sheet, wire and rough stone, in the old fashioned way. We cut almost all of the stones in our jewelry and we do not use laser welders or many other forms of modern machinery to make our jewelry. We retail as well as wholesale our jewelry and always welcome others ideas for new projects.

It is standard procedure (if a customer must have Native Made Jewelry) for us to design a specific style of bracelet, ring, necklace, buckle and so on - then sub the design out to particular Navajo Silversmiths to be produced. We are located in the jewelry capitol of Native American jewelry makers and culture.

We use Sterling Silver, Agate, Faustite, Dinosaur Bone, Turquoise, Variscite, Sugilite, Lapis, Opal, Coral and a wide range of gemstones to create some of the finest jewelry being produced in the Southwestern United States.

We are rockhounds and collectors of fine gems and minerals, specializing in Turquoise.
