Wall Street Journal features Durango Silver Company

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

Wall Street Journal Turquoise Jewelry PublicationA nice article went out last weekend featuring Turquoise Jewelry from Durango Silver Co. Here is the just of it;

When considering traditional turquoise jewelry, your first thought might be: That’s so ’80s. Like, “Can’t Buy Me Love” ’80s. (Remember Cindy Mancini, the Tucson, Ariz., high school student who wore dangly Southwestern earrings with a white fringed leather jacket and a fluffy side part?)

Well, we’ve got news: Turquoise has grown up, and should be treated accordingly.

Try pairing the traditionally casual stone—say, a silver squash-blossom necklace—with a strapless gown for black tie or accessorizing a crisp white shirt and 1940s-style pencil skirt with a statement cuff and a giant mosaic cocktail ring, as turquoise enthusiast (and long-time Taos, N.M., resident) Millicent Rogers did.

You’ll find the stone adds a touch of can’t-pin-me-down magic. One of Ms. Rogers’s favorite pastimes was strolling from her adobe house to the nearby Pueblo villages to collect (and bargain for) baubles. Today, the Standard Oil heiress’s jewel box of turquoise—about 1,000 pieces—is housed in a museum in New Mexico bearing her name. If you start now, your collection might just add up.

Turquoise Spiritual Facts

In America, Turquoise has been brought to the attention of our society most recently. In relation to its historic past, Turquoise has been one of the most spiritual gemstones used by ancient healers for over 7,500 years! The most interesting thing to us is that in all unrelated cultures globally, the “Skystone”, Turquoise is believed to bring good health, happiness and fortune to its bearers.

Turquoise is one of the very first gemstones found by modern man, it was found prior to 6,000 B.C. by the Egyptians. Historic records show that the first Turquoise Jewelry has been carbon dated prior to 5,500 B.C. and these facts are on display in the Cairo Museum of Egypt. Throughout the years since, it has been worshipped by many cultures, worldwide, and each believing that Turquoise was put on Earth from the powers above. Global records show that all cultures, most with no connection to each other, have the same spiritual values for Turquoise which is that it brings good health, happiness and fortune to its bearers. Tibetans believe it has the most spiritual values if it has been given to a person by another.

The Anasazi Indians from Chaco Canyon founded Turquoise approximately 200 B.C. They adorned themselves in it, used it for medicinal purposes and used it in ceremonials with others for hundreds of years. By about 900 A.D., Turquoise from this region had made its way to the southern most parts of what we now call North America and the Yucatan Peninsula. The first Turquoise boom was around 1000 A.D. when the Mayans were trading for so much Turquoise Pueblo Bonito’s inhabitants more than doubled in less than 50 years. Sounds unbelievable, but it is true! There was a major trade route over the Sierra Madre to Chaco Canyon – thousands of miles over a thousand years ago!

The Navajos began making Silver Jewelry less than 150 years ago and incorporated Turquoise into their Jewelry about 1880. For the last 130 years, Turquoise and Turquoise Jewelry has taken great strides in modern American culture and today it is seen being worn by people in all walks of life. Interesting enough, many Americans think Turquoise is from the Southwest and just made by Native American Indians. Now we find, the Native American Indians are among the most recent inhabitants to have discovered this wonder stone.

We are learning new things about Turquoise daily and constantly write our findings in presentation pages in our “Learning Center” on the Durango Silver Co website. We encourage you to look at our findings and invite you to respond to our writings with your views.

Native American Indians from this region have worn and cherished Turquoise Bracelets for their own choice of Jewelry item to be worn since Turquoise Jewelry began in the Southwest. When we look back in publications from the past, we find photos of Navajo Indians wearing Turquoise Bracelets and in many photos we see them wearing several at one time.

Turquoise Jewelry and especially Turquoise Bracelets were a status of wealth to the Navajo’s at one time, the more Turquoise Jewelry and Bracelets they wore the wealthier they were. Wealth to a person is a form of happiness, ot makes a human feel good about themselves when they feel others respect them for one thing or another – when people thing you are wealthy they generally look up to you.

Turquoise and Turquoise Jewelry has been a spiritual thing with the Navajo’s as well as many tribal peoples around the world since it was found over 7,500 years ago. Archaeologists have found Turquoise Bracelets dating back to 5500 B.C. and studies have shown that Turquoise was one of the very first gemstones known to man. Navajo’s are very spiritual people and wearing Turquoise Jewelry as well as Turquoise Bracelets goes way beyond being a sign of wealth. In all cultures worldwide, it is said that Turquoise brings good health, happiness and fortune and this is also the belief of the Navajo! Native American Indians wear Turquoise Bracelets for good health, happiness and fortune.

An authentic Turquoise Bracelet, when worn will immediately grab your attention and it will bring a since of warmness over your soul as you wear it into the day. Beg, barrow or purchase a Turquoise Bracelet and see for yourself, wearing a Turquoise Bracelet has a life altering affect on many humans.

When we say Authentic Turquoise Jewelry, we mean the piece is real! There is a lot of junk, costume Turquoise Jewelry that has come onto the market due to its popularity. People have always jumped on the band wagon when they could make a buck and the Turquoise Jewelry market is the same. The Chinese are now making Turquoise out of cement and using dye for the color, others are making fake Turquoise from plastic resins and some are crushing chalk from around Turquoise deposits and mixing it with plastic resin to call it Turquoise.  We do not believe this trash has any spiritual value and is worthless as far as having any monetary values as well.

Inlay Turquoise BraceletThe Turquoise Bracelet to the right has authentic Turquoise inlaid into channels in the Sterling Silver. This is a simple and affordable Turquoise Bracelet that is comfortable and attractive to wear on a daily basis. It will go with just about any dress style worn and it is surprising  just how well it will match any of the other attire you may wear.
